No. XX.

Sonnet.

Be mine — beside the cool translucent stream,

Beneath the waving willow’s chequer’d shade,

Soft on the verdant turf supinely laid

To trace with extacy the Poet’s theme!

Or wrapt in contemplation, fondly dream

Scenes of long-lost delight once more display’d

While all my soul joy’s animating beam

Illumes, in fancy’s vivid tints array’d.

Then as the fading phantoms disappear,

And anguish through my mind resumes its sway,

While rising sighs my pensive bosom rend,

And o’er my cheek descends the flowing tear,

Ah then! the struggling passions to allay,

Be mine — the social sympathizing friend. [257]
