Monthly Review, 2nd Series, 80 (July 1816), 323. Review of The Brothers

The Brothers; or Consequences. A Story of what happens every Day, addressed to that most useful Part of the Community, the laboring Poor. By Mary Hays. Small 12mo. 2s. Button and Son. 1815.

The form of a drama is not judiciously given to this tale, in which the history of a man's whole life and the events of many years are depicted: but the work is likely to be useful, its aim being to shew the imprudence of those marriages among the laboring classes, in which the lover is attracted rather by shewy than by sterling qualities, and in which no provision has been made for future or contingent expences.
