7th Septr. A day with my old friend Mary Hayes who then lived with her brother at Wandsworth – M: H: in her retiremt was never able to regain her sercomposure of mind – Disappointed in her affections, by the loss of Will: Frend, they were aggravated when he married Miss Blackburn The more, as the want of means were his alleged reason for not marrying her And his wife was passionless – I can find an excuse for Frends inconstancy in a wearisome sentimentality in good Mary Hayes – Among the few Sayings of Rochefoucault which I remember ^with pleasure^ & quote is one “On est plus proche d’aimer ceux qui nous haissent que ceux qui nous aiment trop” –
