30 November [In Morley, I: 212]: … I walked to [Mill Street] Dock Head Bermondsey (after calling by the way on George Wedd) and dined with my old friend Miss Hays at her brother’s Mr Thos. Hays. Miss H. I found quite well – if possible a little more prim in person than when I saw her last – She was a little displeased with me for inattention to her letters, but she is placable. Mr H. lives now near the water-side – Miss H. says from prudence – I hope from no reverse of fortune. The father of 8 children may without any suspicion against his credit well enough retrench his expenditure.We talked about our old acquaintances pleasantly enough – but I was as usual heavy after dinner.

Miss H. is going to reside at Peckham and wishes for literary employment – I know not how it is to be got. …
