1828

On the 8th of August on the Pier at Calais I fell in with a lady Miss Tooke – daughter of the Revd W. Tooke – (the Author) and friend of Miss Hayes – At London my journal remarks, “We should have scarcely ^noticed each other^ Here we cordially shook hands – By which no personal preference was expressed on either side, but the satisfaction of seeing a known Countenance among strangers A social feeling even ^often^ mistaken for friendship or individual liking.”
