c. August 1796
Mary Wollstonecraft to Mary Hays, Sunday morning [undate, c. August 1796].1
Pray do not make any more allusion to painful feelings, past and gone – I have been most hurt at your not labouring to acquire more contentment; for true ^it is^ wisdom, I believe, ^to^ extract as much happiness, as we can, out of the various ills of life – for who has not cause to be miserable, if they will allow themselves to think so?
Yours sincerely
Mary
